I drew an important woman from history for 100 days leading up to the 2016 election. I focused on more obscure women, women whose accomplishments have been forgotten, erased, or have simply fallen out of popularity.

Shirley Chisholm

Shirley Chisholm, first black US congresswoman, first black person to to run for president, first woman to run for the Democratic pres. nomination, fighter for the people.

Emma Goldman

Emma Goldman: Preacher of Anarchy, advocate for contraception, sexual freedom, gender equality, women, homosexuals; critic of war, prison and capitalism.

Rumiko Takahashi

Rumiko Takahashi, Author of Ranma ½, InuYasha, Urusei Yatsura, and more. One of the worlds top-selling cartoonists.

Josephine Baker

Josephine Baker, talented, beautiful, smart & brave. Coming from humble beginnings in a poor, segregated neighborhood of St. Louis, she would become a worldwide sensation as a dancer and singer, spy for the French Revolution in WWII, fight for civil rights and much more.

Lucy Gonzalez Parsons

Lucy Gonzalez Parsons, labor organizer, writer, orator, she co-founded the IWW (International Workers of the World). An aggressive advocate for the working and poor, children & women, she frequently clashed with authorities, most notoriously, the Chicago police.

Queen Lili’uokalani

Queen Lili’uokalani, author, musician, and first female regent of Hawai’i (ruling on her own behalf). She improved working conditions for many Hawaiians and immigrant workers, running afoul of exploitative corporate interests. Those largely US corporations, with help from the US government, would stage a coup and dispossess the Queen, ending the ancient Kingdom of Hawai’i and Hawaiian sovereignty.

Maria Tallchief

Maria Tallchief, gained fame as “America’s first prima ballerina.” She was one of the Five Moons, five Native American ballerinas from Oklahoma who achieved international fame during the mid 20th century. The other four were: Myra Yvonne Chouteau, Rosella Hightower, Moscelyne Larkin, and Maria’s sister Marjorie Tallchief.

Juana Galán

Juana Galán, heroine of Valdepeñas, nicknamed La Galana, lead a group of mostly women in guerrilla battle to fight off Napoleons troops. The battle would be an important victory in the region of La Mancha, and would eventually lead to decisive turning back of French troops from Spain.

Nellie Bly

Nellie Bly, pioneering investigative journalist & writer, also made a record-breaking trip around the world.

Noor Inayat Khan

Noor Inayat Khan, from a family of Indian nobility & artists, was a children’s author, musician and pacifist until the Nazis invaded France. As a member of British Secret Executive Operations. Khan worked as the only radio operator in occupied Paris for months until she was betrayed. After her arrest she was imprisoned in German concentration camps until her execution in 1944.
